Was Beckett’s BGS 10 Jordan a Publicity Stunt?

By Adam McFarland

Back in April I wrote about how amazing it was that earlier that month Beckett had graded its first BGS 10 1986-1987 Fleer Michael Jordan Rookie Card. I also commented on how Beckett ripped PSA and asserted themselves as the top grading company. The article on Beckett.com stated that:

The owner delivered the previously PSA 10 graded card to BGS and requested that the card be "crossed over." The owner's aim with crossing this card over was to increase the recognized value of the card on the secondary market by having the recognized leader in the grading industry slab or encase the Jordan rookie card. BGS has been recognized by consumers for the last six years in a row as the industry's top grading company.

I found the whole thing a little low brow, but nonetheless assumed that the Jordan card was still a worthwhile piece of news. That was, until I was contacted by longtime collector Bill from Hobart, IN.

Bill and I exchanged several emails and I was absolutely in awe of his knowledge and passion for a hobby that he has been involved in for an astounding 56 years. I had originally planned on using Bill's emails to formulate an argument against BGS, but after reading through the emails a few more times, I realized that Bill tells the story better than I ever could (he's been a collector nearly twice as long as I've been alive). Below is a compilation of quotes from our email exchange. [read entire article]

David Wright Signs with Topps

"The Topps Company has announced that it has signed an exclusive trading card deal with New York Mets superstar David Wright.

The deal grants New York City-based Topps exclusive rights within the Major League Baseball trading card category for autographed cards, memorabilia cards, insert cards and Wright's image on packaging and advertising."

All signs point to Wright being one of the elite players of the coming decade and Topps did well in signing him up. And Wright actually could use the money - with all of his success he's only making $374,000 - good for 21st on the Mets roster. He might be the MVP of the National League, but he's paid less than Endy Chavez and Chris Woodward. Unbelievable.

Cam Ward Collectibles Hot

Rookie Goaltender Cam Ward has been the greatest beneficiary of the Carolina Hurricanes Stanley Cup in the world sports collectibles. Ward's timely saves were one of the biggest reasons that the Hurricanes were able to win two game sevens, and overcome a 2-0 deficit in the first round against Montreal. For all his hard work, he was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy for playoff MVP and collectors have certainly noticed.

According to the article, "his short-printed Upper Deck (No. 229) card shot up from $15 to $50 over the past two months. His SPX rookie jersey autograph (No.166) tripled from $40 to $120 and his Black Diamond card (No. 152) has jumped from $15 to $40 the past two months." Not bad for a guy who entered the playoffs as a backup. [read more]
