| Wheaties Paying Tribute to Texas Western's 1966 NCAA Champs |
When I first heard about this on Tuff Stuff's website I thought that it was a great idea to honor Texas Western's 1966 NCAA Basketball team. The team, which had an all African American starting five, is famous for beating noted racist Adolf Rupp's all White Kentucky team (between Rupp and Hitler, do you think another parent dared name their child Adolf?) But then I asked myself the question - why would they be honoring them now? The article said for the 40th anniversary....ok, I suppose, but the 40th usually isn't a big deal. Not until I read that Disney is releasing "Glory Road", a movie about the team, in January. I am fine with co-branding as a marketing strategy, in fact, I think it's a phenomenal way to go about advertising your business or product. But for some reason, it feels wrong in this case. Maybe because I associate Wheaties boxes with the Olympics and World Series Champs, not to promote a Disney movie. I guess if it makes business sense for Wheaties, they should do it. But for whatever reason, it knocks Wheaties down a peg in my mind. [read official release]

| Jewish MLB Update Set Features New Players and More |
The 2006 Update edition of Jewish Major Leaguers baseball cards have been released. The set includes players that made their debut in the last two years, newly discovered old timers, and other special cards. Maybe I lived in a cave the past few years, but when did they come out with Jewish MLB cards? Come on guys. Do we really need a Jewish line of cards? Or a Christian line of cards, or Muslim line of cards for that matter? Why not just start releasing White lines of cards, Black lines of cards, and Hispanic lines of cards? Wake up people. We live in 2005. Being only 23, most people in my generation were raised not to discriminate against different races and religions. If we want to start living in a truly equal society, we need to start treating people equally and not singling them out for their ethnicity or beliefs. How about recognizing players for what they do on the field, not for what they worship off of it. [read article]

| Collector Pulls Card With Autographs From Four Original Hall of Famers UPDATE |
Last week, I ripped into Barry Scott of Guntown, Mississippi pretty good - and I was wrong. Barry opened a pack of 2005 Upper Deck SP Legendary Cuts that contained a once in a lifetime card featuring the signatures of Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner, and Walter Johnson, four of the five inductees into the inaugural class of the Baseball Hall of Fame. He had turned down $50,000 for the card, which had an estimated value of $20,000. I thought he was stupid for not taking the $50,000 because, after all, it was more than the $20,000 the card was estimated to go for! Well, at last check of the auction, Barry was getting a cool $88,888.88 with nearly three days left. Oops! Good thing he didn't listen to my advice. Congrats Barry. [eBay Auction] |
