A Fresh Look at Sports Collectibles News

Adolf Hitler Denied Autograph Requests

From Beckett:

"Adolph Hitler did not respond to through-the-mail autograph requests in 1934. At least he didn't from one American collector, who otherwise put together a fabulous collection of celebrity signatures from the 1930s through the 1960s.

Included in the collection are signatures of Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner and Bobby Jones in the sports arena. But the collection goes even deeper into Americana. Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, Mary Pickford, Jimmy Doolittle, Bing Crosby, Frank Buck, Admiral Byrd also are included. There's even a non-cursive signature from a then 7-year-old movie starlet: "Love, Shirley Temple," reads one of the cards.

The original collector also solicited a signature from Adolf Hitler, but received only a note – typed in German – from his secretary denying the request."

My take:

This has got to be one of my all-time favorites. It's not that surprising that he asked for Hitlers autograph...it's surprising that Hitler's secreatary responded! I didn't have Hitler pegged as the kind of business man that wants his secretary working on responding to American autograph requests. I thought he had bigger things on his plate. Can you imagine the conversation:

Secretary: Adolf, one of your American fans wants an autograph.

Adolf: Send him a letter thanking him for being a fan and telling him that I unfortunately get too many requests to handle each one personally.

Unbelievable. I BADLY want to read what that letter said!

Donruss + Dairy = Stupid Idea

From Beckett:

"The Donruss Playoff Trading Card Company will be working with Dairy Management Inc. to produce five trading cards that will be used in their school initiative program. The program will deliver the message of healthy eating and lifestyle to hundreds of kids in NFL markets indicated with each player's team.

The players involved in the promotion will be DeShaun Foster from the Carolina Panthers, Ronnie Brown from the Miami Dolphins, Allen Rosum from the Atlanta Falcons, Erron Kinney from the Tennessee Titans and Takeo Spikes from the Buffalo Bills.

My take:

Can football cards make kids consume more dairy products? Do kids even know who DeShaun Foster, Ronnie Brown, Allen Rosum, Erron Kinney, and Takeo Spikes are? What a waste of time and money on both of their parts. I'm pretty sure most kids are going to throw those cards in the trash and keep eating their Snack Packs.

But wait, the cards do say "Make the Play with 3-A-Day, milk, cheese and yogurt. For bones as strong as the pros, be sure to get your 3-A-Day of dairy." Who can resist that!

NHL Legends 4 Photos Unveiled

From McFarlane:

"McFarlane Toys is proud to present NHL Legends Series 4, featuring six members of the Hockey Hall of Fame and three of the most unforgettable moments in hockey history. We've set the bar very high with previous series of NHL Legends, but this fourth edition could be the best yet."

My take:

I agree McFarlane - the set includes Wayne Gretzky, Bobby Orr, Darryl Sittler, Bobby Clarke, Gilbert Perreault, and Bobby Hull. The Bobby Orr piece has him flying through the air after his LEGENDARY Stanley Cup clinching goal in 1970. Just looking at the figure gives me goose bumps. Every sports fan should pick that figure up.
